AB OBJECTIVE: To highlight the future impact of HIV on African children &
their families due to HIV infection in Africa. METHODS: Data especially
from studies in Africa & current projection of HIV infection in women &
children were reviewed. RESULTS: About 1/3 of 15 million HIV positive
people are women of child bearing age, 1/2 of them in Africa. From
1990-2000, about 3 million women & 2.7 Million children will die of
Aids. In East & Central Africa 10-37% of pregnant women in some cities
are HIV positive, 1/3 of their newborns will be infected. For HIV
infected children, 25% will die by age 1 & 80% by age 5. The scarce
resources will be utilised for the sick. Surviving orphans will have no
care for their needs hence an increase in juvenile deliquents, street
children, drug & sex abuse, crime & family disintegration. DISCUSSIONS
AND CONCLUSIONS: Socio-economic crisis face African families: 1) high
morbidity & Mortality rates. 2) increasing deprived children 3) family
disintegration 4) there is need to minimise HIV in women & children & to
plan for the future of the surviving children.
